We’re talking today about the differences between stock exchanges and crypto exchanges. They sound very similar, Charlie, but can you tell us how a stock exchange stacks up against a crypto exchange?

Charlie Shrem: Sure, so the first real difference you’ll see on a crypto exchange website is the ability to select from many different languages. Crypto exchanges are global. When you’re trading there is a chance, probably a good chance, that you’re not trading with someone in your own country. You’re trading with someone anywhere in the world.

Breaking Down Borders

Crypto is really breaking down borders and barriers. Unlike the stock exchanges. They are very localized. You have the New York Stock Exchange, the Hollywood Stock Exchange, every country, state, city has its own stock exchange. Only really big companies can get listed on more than one. Crypto is a global exchange, it’s a global product.

A secondary difference is that on crypto exchanges, you’re actually trading the asset on the exchange directly. Whereas on the stock exchange, you don’t actually take that asset and send it to the exchange and then need to trade it. With Crypto you’re trading that digital asset – you are the bearer of that asset. When you have Bitcoin, you are actually holding that Bitcoin, you control it completely.

In stock exchanges, they have settlement houses and clearing houses and very rarely do people actually have the certificate showing that they own that stock. It’s very confusing. It didn’t take me long to understand how crypto and crypto exchanges work, but I still don’t understand how the stock market works.
