Thieves smash open bitcoin ATMs in Houston, Las Vegas, to steal cash, officials say

IQ THOUGHTS:

The rise of cryptocurrency will also mean the rise of cryptocurrency crime, so now more than ever, it’s time to take full responsibility for the security of your cryptocurrency.

Criminals tend to be smart, and they know crypto is valuable even if, truth be told, we’re not thrilled about the current state of the market. Even so, at this writing, the total cryptocurrency market capitalization is more than $273 billion, which is a little more than lunch money.

We’ve seen this play out, especially over recent days. See the story in yesterday’s digest about bikers who kidnapped their “friend” and stole his crypto stash worth $2 million.

Marine Exploration in the Bahamas to be Funded by Blockchain

IQ THOUGHTS:

We daily celebrate the accomplishments and big ambitions of blockchain developers, especially when they’re aimed at making the world better.

We hear a lot about the environmental impacts of cryptocurrency and blockchain, that Bitcoin uses the energy of a small country to power mining. So we have to remind people that the financial industry is an energy suck that is far greater if you consider the banks and finance buildings around the globe, the cars of financial industry employees, the computing energy it also uses and so much more. In fact, we’re willing to bet that the industry that cryptocurrency could replace uses at least as much energy as cryptocurrency and likely a lot more.

While you don’t hear about the financial industry doing much for the environment, you’re beginning to hear a lot about how blockchain technology can advance a host of environmental sustainability projects.

Just this week we’ve written about a blockchain-based plan to pay the poorest people on earth to pick up plastic rubbish for recycling. The effort puts cash in the hand of people who desperately need it while cleaning up one of the biggest environmental problems facing the world.

This article outlines how blockchain is being used to raise money for ocean exploration and educating.

Monero Miners to See Charges in Japan’s First CryptoJacking Criminal Case

IQ THOUGHTS:

Japan is serious about not only regulating cryptocurrency but also going after nefarious types in the space. That’s the case with these folks who were using the computing powers of others to mine Monero and other cryptocurrencies. To know what’s achievable with cryptocurrency, you sometimes have to look at what the criminal element is doing.
