According to Forbes, “For the financially minded, blockchain’s greatest gift is that it unlocked the collective power of an informal retail investment market. Whether for pure speculation or to crowdfund new business concepts, the infant technology amazed the world by demonstrating, like a magnifying glass focusing sunlight, how it could channel and exploit the power of untapped investor demand. At the center of a market that at one point topped $800 billion in total capitalization, Bitcoin is the seminal example after gaining in popularity over the last few years. Cryptocurrency has since surrendered some of its limelight to a new breed of collective investing known as initial coin offerings (ICOs).”
“Despite continuous haphazard attempts from regulators and governments to reign in the bull, investors piled into cryptocurrency markets to snatch up popular digital tokens like Ethereum, Ripple and Dash. A more impressive amount of money has been invested in the new tokens spawned by ICOs, which raised over $5.6 billion in 2017, and over $6.3 billion in just the first few months of 2018. Though this reality presents a quandary for traditional financial entities and VCs which are hesitant to go with the flow, it continues full steam ahead. Even the Commodity Futures Trading Commission in the U.S. has indicated that cryptocurrency is virtually inextricable from its blockchain underpinnings, forcing regulators to continue practicing restraint.”
“As money continues to pour into cryptocurrency markets, the next wave of investors come from decidedly more institutional backgrounds. For many reasons, venture capitalists are now at the cusp of the crypto market and busily preparing their own big debut. While some are more interested in the disruptive power granted by blockchain, other VCs are enthralled by the potential for returns or a position atop the new empire. Regardless, the entrance of venture capital funding and expertise into cryptocurrency will make tremendous waves.”
