Yesterday on May. 5, Market Rebellion’s proprietary Unusual Activity programs flagged the purchase of 6,000 Weekly $157.50 calls for $0.51 to $0.88 with shares at $155.50. This was clearly fresh buying, as volume was clearly above the strike’s previous open interest of 3,546 contracts.
Those calls have traded for as much as $2.40 so far today, over 3 times their average purchase price. The stock rose 2.66% in the same time frame, illustrating how quickly options can far outperform their underlying calls.
Long calls lock in the price where investors can buy a stock, letting them position for a rally at limited cost with the potential for significant leverage. They carry less risk than owning shares because the most that can be lost is the price of the options no matter how far the stock might fall.
JPM was last trading at $159.51, up 1.31% on the session. The bank topped earnings expectations on Apr. 14.
