Pete’s Covered Calls combines a popular options strategy with an introduction to equity trading. This service focuses on a type of trade known as “covered calls,” which are a way to generate income or subsidize stock purchases by selling options to collect their premium while holding the underlying shares.
Behind the Strategy
Options are contracts that allow you to buy or sell stock at a pre-determined price: Calls bet that a stock will go higher, while puts bet that it will go lower. The concept of covered calls, sometimes known as “buy/writes,” is a bullish strategy that works best on stocks that rise over the long term but may grind sideways before performing appreciably. Until the rally comes, we can sell calls at elevated prices (far “out of the money”) in the stocks we own to collect income–often referred to as “getting paid to wait.” But we must find options to sell at a level that we do not believe the shares will reach before the calls expire. To do this, we look for options that have a relatively high implied volatility and therefore outsized premiums to harvest.
