Just yesterday, on Aug. 9, Market Rebellion’s Unusual Activity programs detected the the purchase 8,400 Weekly $27 calls, expiring this Friday, for $0.41 to $1.38 with shares at $25.95. Open interest in the contract before the trade occurred was just 3,663, showing that this was a new position.
Those calls traded for as much as $3.40 today, well over 3 times their average purchase price. The stock rose 16.34% in the same time frame, illustrating the kind of leverage that can be achieved quickly with options.
Long calls lock in the price where investors can buy a stock, letting them position for a rally at limited cost with the potential for significant leverage. They carry less risk than owning shares because the most that can be lost is the price of the options no matter how far the stock might fall.
PLUG was up 3.26% to close at $29.10. The hydrogen fuel cell manufacturer broke ground today on a new green hydrogen production plan plant in Georgia.
