When you read headlines about tariffs and punitive trade barriers being put up, many think US President Trump is responsible. I would remind that that believe this that the European Union began this rhetoric ahead of President Trump by some five months, when they suggested the Brexit vote would result in a price the UK would have to pay for no longer being part of their club.

When you look at the map above, or the data below, you will quickly grasp exactly which countries have the most to lose. Despite a population that is less than 1/3 of the United States, Germany exports over 1.4 trillion in dollar terms and thus, would take a rather severe blow should an outright trade war get underway. And to add further problems to the German situation, a good portion of their automobiles are made in the United States, so retaliatory tariffs could hit them from both their membership in the EU and any actions against the US.
