What is there to be positive about? Everything!

Positivity. There’s a multitude of different ways to define it. Creating and having an optimistic state of mind. Looking for solutions and expecting success. Focusing on making life happier.

Positivity and motivation go hand-in-hand. Almost always, your motivation feeds off positivity. But, what happens when you’re thrown a curveball? Take that even further – what happens when the world is thrown the biggest, slickest, nastiest curveball in our present era? What happens when the world, the economy, life in general has its foundation shaken to the core? Are we supposed to stand there, shaking in awe as we center around the metaphorical rubble of negativity that surrounds us? Sure, that would be easy. But as redundant as it may sound, life isn’t easy. Life’s tough…But you and I are tougher.

Weeks ago, our lives were all changed whether we liked it or not. Stay inside, stay away from people, friends, family. We were told the consequences. Some of us, very unfortunately, were impacted even further by the loss of a loved one. These times are unusual and strange. Quite frankly, these times suck. Unemployment, economical demise, and loss of life. This is the perfect time to be negative. This is the perfect time to remain unmotivated. But, what if I told you that this is the perfect time to change your life?

We as human beings have an innate desire to be comfortable. Stress is the mind and body straying away from a comfortable state of equilibrium. Our bodies react to our environment in the form of feelings and actions. Those feelings and actions in turn cause our bodies to adapt, sometimes in ways we do not desire. It’s about being in control of those feelings and actions, and yes, that can be hard – especially in times like these. So how do you adapt? How do we balance? It’s all about adjusting. Here’s the tricky part – adjusting isn’t always comfortable. Adjusting, actually, can be extremely tough. But, recall who I said was tougher.

Adjusting to this new way of life is a challenge. Challenges are good. They shape us. So, how do we do it? Being stuck at home can seem a lot like Groundhog Day on repeat. Break that cycle and switch it up. Even these little changes can lead to a greater appreciation and positive outlook on life.

Take me for example. I get to experience things in the present time that I never had before. Every night I eat dinner with my family, always have, that hasn’t changed. However, now, we get to have breakfast together as well. We get to spend more time together. We get to communicate more. I appreciate that. You have to allow yourself to make the best out of things. Appreciation will follow.

It’s a lot like football. Players dreaded three-a-days in the Tampa Bay heat, and rightly so. But, much like the day-to-day in our current state, there are always ways to make something better. Players used to find humor in the worst of times. That’s adapting. That’s adjusting. Many players actually miss the locker room more than the game, itself. It’s because as a player you are able to make light of the tough times. You are able to find ways around obstacles. You are able to make the best out of a difficult situation. That’s finding appreciation.

Sure, you might not currently be able to go out for dinner or drinks, or even to a family member’s house, but you absolutely can still get outside and get fresh air. Appreciate that. Appreciate the little things. Everyday on my morning runs, I’m alone outside for a mile. There’s a certain serenity and calmness in hearing birds above head. I never paid attention to that before. The simple things. I appreciate that now.

I stated previously that we as humans have an innate desire to be comfortable. Humans are also born with fight, with perseverance. We’re not made to keel over and give up. We must remember that the world isn’t really all that bad. We hear a lot about people being bored in this current time. Well, you can’t be bored unless you’re a boring person. We need to realize what we’re looking at each and every day. Not being able to find the good and positivity in things, even the smallest things, can trick us into thinking we’re bored. Find that appreciation. Find that positivity. Find that motivation. Life’s tough, that’s a fact. It’s easy to be negative. It’s easy to be a wishful thinker. And although life is tough, always remember who’s tougher. That’s something I think we can all appreciate.
