Quick recap

Equity markets saw whipsawing price action following the release of March’s FOMC meeting minutes last Wednesday. The notes revealed some Fed officials were taking a slightly more hawkish outlook on monetary policy — meaning a potentially more aggressive stance on interest rate hikes over the next year.

Ultimately, the S&P 500 closed the week -1.25% at 4,488. The Dow finished down a modest 0.28 at 34,721. Tech stocks saw the worst it, as the Nasdaq closed -3.59% at 14,327. Check out the action in the S&P 500 Index (SPX) 30-minute chart below.

What to watch this week

Consumer price index

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ consumer price index (due out Tuesday) will highlight inflation data for March. It’s expected to come in hot once again, with economists projecting CPI to show a 8.4% year-over-year increase.

Earnings roundup

Earnings season is back! But there are still a few weeks before the biggest names report — including members of the “trillion-dollar club”.

The big banks will kick things off with their reports for Q1 starting Wednesday. JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM), BlackRock, Inc. (BLK), Wells Fargo & Company (WFC), Goldman Sachs (GS), Morgan Stanley (MS), and Citigroup (C) highlight the week ahead. We’ll also hear from other popular stocks like Taiwan Semiconductor (TSM), Delta Air Lines (DAL), and UnitedHealth Group (UNH).
