Quick recap

Markets closed near all-time highs heading into the Christmas holiday. The S&P 500 finished higher on the week by 2.27% at 4,725. The Dow closed higher by 1.65% at 35,950. Tech stocks crushed it as the Nasdaq finished 3.19% higher at 15,653.

Traders will be watching to see if the Santa Claus rally continues into the final trading week of 2021. Is Tom Lee’s prediction of 4,800 on the S&P 500 still intact? It certainly appears possible as the index is currently knocking on the door.

Crypto update

In the world of crypto, Bitcoin has found its way back above $50k over the last few hours after surging back above the critical level on Thursday and cooling off over the weekend. At writing, $BTC is trading for $50,880 — up about 8% from last Sunday.

The rest of the crypto market has performed quite well over the last week as well. Ethereum $ETH +3%, Binance Coin $BNB + 2.8%, Solana $SOL +8%, Cardano $ADA +15%, Terra $LUNA +26%, Polkadot $DOT +25%, Avalanche $AVAX +5.9%, Dogecoin $DOGE +12%, and Shiba Inu $SHIB +24% are all trading higher on the week.

What to watch this week

Earnings roundup

With 2021 coming to an end, traders will have to wait for the exciting earnings seasons ahead in the new year. There’s only a couple notable companies still left to report before the ball drops.

Cal-Maine Foods $CALM releases their Q4 report Tuesday after the close. Then, FuelCell Energy $FCEL reports Q4 data Wednesday premarket.

Economic calendar

There’s a relatively short list of events on the calendar this week worth monitoring. Here’s some of the most important things to watch:

• S&P Case-Shiller U.S. home price index (Oct. YoY) – Tuesday at 9am ET
• Trade in goods, advanced report (Nov.) – Wednesday at 8:30am ET
• Pending home sales index (Nov.) – Wednesday at 10am ET
• Initial and continuing jobless claims – Thursday at 8:30am ET
• Chicago PMI (Dec.) – Thursday at 9:45am ET
