Your Trading Week Ahead — March 6th

Welcome to Your Trading Week Ahead for March 6th. Here’s what you need to know before you go…

Quick recap

Volatility continued across equity markets last week amid escalating Russia-Ukraine tensions and Jerome Powell’s inflation testimony to Congress. The latter sent indices higher Wednesday after the Fed Chairman indicated he was “inclined” to support a slower rate increase to ease potential economic ramifications resulting from the conflict in Europe.

But the rally was short-lived. After opening at a high of $441.54 Thursday morning, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) traded as low as $428 the following day.

When all was said and done, the S&P 500 closed the week lower by 1.28% at 4,328. The Dow finished down 1.30% at 33,614. Tech stocks were hit the hardest, as the Nasdaq closed down 2.78% at 13,313.

While traders will continue eyeing the developing situation in Ukraine, there are other events you should be aware of in the week ahead.

What to watch this week

CPI inflation data

The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) print is due Thursday morning, giving us a fresh look at inflation. Another red-hot reading is expected, with consensus economists anticipating February’s data to show a 7.9% increase year-over-year — up from January’s rise of 7.5%.
